This Woodland Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanoides) butterfly happily sips a nectar cocktail from the flower of a Bull Thistle (Cirsium vulgare) plant in a Garry Oak savanna in Victoria, British Columbia. Garry oak savannas have been heavily invaded by non-native plants, so researchers record observations of nectar foraging to better understand the degree to which non-native plants are being incorporated into native butterfly nectar diets. By simultaneously tracking nectar availability over time, researchers can better understand the role of flowering phenology (i.e., timing of bloom) in governing these species interactions.
