As they are so long lived and immobile, in a wooded landscape, trees form the scaffolding for all sorts of interactions between plants and animals. With recent advancements in unmanned aerial vehicles, researchers can now map forested canopies down to the individual trees. Starting on the left, with raw drone photography, this image transitions to a computer-generated model of the real trees. Using the characteristics from the red, green, and blue wavelengths, tree species can be predicted. Shown here are predicted lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) in red, white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) in blue, and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) in yellow.
