By closely examining the bone microstructure in extinct species, like this theropod dinosaur, we can determine their age, growth rates, and physiology. This animal is estimated to have been around 50 years old at death, one of the oldest individual ages known in a non-avian dinosaur. Visible in this photo from its fibula are numerous secondary osteons and signs of bone remodeling. Image Credit: Thomas Cullen
